Asian archaic stone object

A Hongshan style stone (marble or a jade variant) cylinder. These lightweigth stone cylinders are believed to be hair ornaments worn by Chinese women for millenia. This particular shape is referred to as horse hoof (mati) shape, the hollowed cylinder spreading upward, cut across at an oblique angle forming an arched profile to the rim and finished with interior ridges on the upper interior wall, the two drill holes at the base suggesting to some its use as a hair ornament held in place by a transverse pin (surfaces altered, chipped). This one probably dates back to the 19th century.
