Still life trompe l’oeil

A so called Trompe L'oeil painting depicting a small bird on a wooden plank. These Trompe L'Oeil (deception of the eye) paintings were already made in the 16th century and developed in to a genre in the 17th century. The objective was to paint materials and structures in such a way the eye of the beholder was deceived to think they were real. This genre remained popular and found itself in to fashion during the 19th century. This example is is of fine quality and is signed Delbumeau and dated 1877.
