SOLD Gandhara, 2nd-4th century AD. Gandhara was an ancient kindom ((6th century BC - 1000) situated in modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan. It produced some of the oldest Boedhist art before being immerghed in the Islam world. This stone fragment is a fine example of their art. A stone frieze fragment comprising a male chest and upper arms with swags to the collar; nimbus to the reverse; mounted on a custom-made stand. 957 grams, 15cm height including stand (6"). Property of a London gentleman; from his father's collection formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Acquired on the London auction market in 2019.
