stone sphere

A 19th century French sandstone sphere. The surface finished in so called 'Bouchardé' with old marks and some corrosion stains. Overall nice patina. Spheres like this were often made by apprentice stonecutters as a exercise and sold as garden- or architectural ornamentation. In rural tradition they were also seen as lucky charm objects which would held negative spirits away from the house.
